The Fries Scheepvaartmuseum is dedicated to the history of Frisian shipping from the 17th to the 20th century. The collection consists of two parts: the history of Frisian shipping and the history of the city Sneek. In addition to shipping and the regional history, the museum also covers water and ice sports. Important in the collection are the more than three hundred ship models and some real ships.

Fries Scheepvaartmuseum has 4 ratings.
The Fries Scheepvaartmuseum, located in Sneek, the Netherlands, offers visitors an informative look into the maritime history of Friesland. The museum is housed in a charming historic building, which adds to its appeal. Exhibits showcase various aspects of shipping and waterways that have been integral to the region's development.
Visitors often appreciate the well-preserved collection of model ships, nautical instruments, and maritime artifacts. The museum provides insight into the local shipbuilding industry and its impact on the area's economy and culture. Many find the displays on traditional Frisian boats particularly interesting.
While the museum receives praise for its content, some visitors note that it may not be extensive enough for a full day visit. The information provided is primarily in Dutch, which can be a drawback for international tourists. However, some exhibits do offer English translations.
The staff is generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the overall experience. The museum's location in the center of Sneek is convenient, allowing visitors to combine it with other local attractions.
For those interested in regional maritime history, the Fries Scheepvaartmuseum provides a solid overview. However, its appeal may be somewhat limited for those without a specific interest in the subject matter.
This museum is an absolute treasure! We came searching ancestry. Your archivist in the office upstairs knew instantly the ancestor, Antonie Veen. She printed pictures, gave us a treasure trove of other resouces - including other museums where we could find artifacts and book on the Veen family. We were able to visit the home of Jan Veen's chocolate factory furniture, now being refurbished, in the Openluchd Museum of Arnhem and to see and touch the Veen company's pleasure yacht restored and exhibited in the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen. We realize that Sneek is serious about documenting their history. We are in admiration of the spirit of the Frieslanders. We are grateful for this ancestry and your help in knowing them better. A big thank you! Dan & Alice Hostetler

Zonder boten zou Friesland niet zijn wat het nu is. Het museum geeft een aardig beeld van de scheepvaart door de jaren heen.
