The Gravensteen is the former stone house of the Count. It is the old administrative and governmental center of the Count of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland. It is also the oldest prison in Zeeland. The prisoners, who were locked up here under poor conditions, have left most traces. The hostage room gives a striking picture of what it must have been like. In the oak walls and doors various images and texts have been carved, the oldest dating from 1577.

Gravensteen has 1 rating.
The visit to this beautiful old castle was marred by the infantile and inane audio commentary. This audio was clearly not intended for people who have an interest in history. The crudeness of this audio should not be offered to children and it is hoped that they are provided with a more suitable audio. The incredible display of weaponry could be enhanced by the descriptions being in the main European languages.
More atmosphere could have been given to the castle by dressing the rooms with furniture /props relevant to that period instead of the few unimaginative drawings affixed to the walls.
On a more positive note the online booking system worked well.
