Highland Park, also known as Highland Botanical Park, is an arboretum located in Rochester, New York. This park is one of the first municipal arboretums in the United States, endowed to the Rochester community in 1888 by nurserymen George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, a renowned landscape architect, with the intention of maintaining a natural appearance.
Covering 150 acres, Highland Park is home to over 1,200 lilac shrubs that represent more than 500 varieties. The park's famous lilac collection was started in 1892 by horticulturist John Dunbar, also known as Johnny Lilacseed. Some of the varieties he planted were descendants of native Balkan Mountain flowers brought to North America by early colonists.
Every May, Highland Park hosts the annual Lilac Festival, which is the largest festival of its kind in North America. This event draws spectators from all over the globe who come to admire the park's extensive lilac collection. The festival includes a variety of activities and events, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
