Origins of the House

The house was purchased by Alexandra David-Néel in 1928 upon her return from Tibet. She named it Samten Dzong, which translates to "fortress of concentration" in Tibetan. Over time, this name evolved to mean "fortress of meditation". This reflects the deep connection between the house and David-Néel's spiritual journey and studies.

Museum Features

In 2016, Samten Dzong was officially recognized as a museum of France. The ground floor of the house displays Alexandra David-Néel's Asian collections, which include artifacts from Japan, Tibet, and China. The upstairs area houses the small room that she referred to as her "hole" and the office where she wrote a significant portion of her literary work.
