The Illuminated Block, known as Manzana de las Luces in Spanish, is a historical landmark located in the Monserrat neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This site holds significant historical value and is a popular destination for tourists interested in the rich history of Argentina.
The Saint Ignatius Church, a baroque structure, was built on the Illuminated Block starting from 1686 and was completed in 1722. The adjoining College of St. Ignatius, designed by local architect Juan Kraus, was constructed between 1710 and 1729. These historical structures add to the architectural richness of the site.
In 1942, the Illuminated Block was declared a National Historic Monument. It underwent extensive restoration in 1983, including three of its catacombs. This recognition and restoration work underline the importance of the site in Argentina's history and heritage.
