The Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA) is a unique paleontological museum nestled between the Asturian towns of Colunga and Lastres. The museum is situated on the coastal plain of San Telmo, a location that has yielded significant dinosaur remains dating back to the last part of the Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago. This makes it a significant site for those interested in paleontology and the history of life on Earth.

Educational Displays and Information

The Jurassic Museum of Asturias offers one of the most comprehensive and educational displays about dinosaurs in the world. Visitors to MUJA can explore the history of life on Earth, from its earliest beginnings to the appearance of humans. The museum provides extensive information on various aspects of dinosaur life, making it an informative and engaging destination for all ages.

Exhibition Areas and Dinosaur History

The museum building is divided into three large areas, each dedicated to one of the periods of the Mesozoic Era: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Throughout the exhibition, visitors are provided with extensive information on various aspects of dinosaur life. These terrestrial reptiles first appeared about 230 million years ago and most species became extinct 65 million years ago.

Fossil Collection

The most significant part of the Jurassic Museum of Asturias is its collection of fossils from the Asturian coast. As of 2006, the museum housed around 8,000 fossils, including 150 Ichnites, 200 vertebrate remains, 103 plant fossils, 11 fragments of trunks, and over 6,000 invertebrate elements. This extensive collection provides a comprehensive look at the diverse life forms that once inhabited this region.

Jurassic Museum of Asturias Reviews

Jurassic Museum of Asturias has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Jurassic Museum of Asturias, located in Colunga near Lastres, Spain, offers an informative experience focused on dinosaurs and prehistoric life. Visitors generally appreciate the museum's modern and interactive exhibits, which include life-sized dinosaur replicas and fossilized footprints. The museum's location, with views of the Asturian coastline, adds to its appeal. However, some guests mention that the museum is relatively small and can be fully explored in a couple of hours. While the content is engaging for dinosaur enthusiasts and children, some visitors note that more detailed information in English would be beneficial. The outdoor area with dinosaur models is often highlighted as a fun feature, especially for families. Overall, the museum provides a good introduction to the region's paleontological significance, though it may not offer enough depth for serious paleontology buffs.
