The Künstlerhaus Lauenburg is housed in a historically significant building complex located at Elbstraße 54. This building, which was constructed around 1850, showcases typical contemporary features of the old sailor city of Lauenburg. Recognizing its historical significance, it was placed under monument protection in 1982. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a tavern, a community center for Italian guest workers, and a residential house, before it was given its current public function.
Today, the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg spans over 600 m² of space, housing four spacious artist apartments and studios, a lounge, and a gallery. This provides a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the creative spaces where artists live and work. The building also has several outbuildings, one of which is located in the old harbor master's office at the Lauenburg harbor, where the music scholarship holders are accommodated.
In October 2011, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus, the Stadtgalerie Lauenburg in Hagenström was opened. This gallery showcases the works of the scholarship holders, providing visitors with an opportunity to view, read, and listen to their creations. This is a testament to the rich artistic heritage that the Künstlerhaus has fostered over the years.
