Kykuit, located in Mount Pleasant, New York, is a museum and historical residence that was commissioned by John D. Rockefeller and built in 1913. The architects behind this neoclassical mansion were Chester Holmes Aldrich and William Adams Delano. It took six years to complete this grand residence, which was home to four generations of Rockefellers before it was declared a historic site by the National Trust.
The design of Kykuit's grounds was initiated in 1906 by landscape architect William Welles Bosworth. He is credited with designing the surrounding terraces and gardens, which feature fountains, pavilions, and classical sculptures. These gardens are considered Bosworth's best work in the United States and offer a magnificent view of the Hudson River.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Kykuit's gardens were enriched with more than 70 works of modern sculpture. These include works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Gaston Lachaise, Aristide Maillol, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, and David Smith.
