The Lake Museum, also known as the musée du lac, is situated in the charming town of Sanguinet, nestled in the French department of Landes. This museum is a hub of archaeological discoveries made by the volunteer divers of CRESS (Centre de recherches et d'études scientifiques de Sanguinet), who conduct underwater excavations of the submerged villages of the Cazaux and Sanguinet lakes.
The museum showcases a variety of objects that have been retrieved from the lake over the years. These include canoes, pottery, jewelry, tools, and more. Additionally, the museum houses archaeological furniture from excavation campaigns conducted on three villages that are now submerged under the lake's waters.
Since 1977, more than 33 canoes have been discovered in the Sanguinet lake. These canoes, primarily made of pine with the exception of four made from oak, measure between 3.60 and 9.80 meters in length, and their width varies between 0.75 and 1.15 meters. These canoes have been dated between 1800 BC and 1815, making this a unique heritage discovery in Europe.
