The Mayhew Cabin, also known as John Brown's Cave, is a significant historical site located in Nebraska City, Nebraska. It holds the distinction of being the only Underground Railroad site in Nebraska that is officially recognized by the National Park Service. This recognition underscores the importance of the site in the history of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement in the United States.
The Mayhew Cabin was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on February 11, 2010. This listing further emphasizes the historical significance of the cabin and its role in the Underground Railroad. It also ensures the preservation of the site for future generations to learn from and appreciate.
In 2005, the Mayhew Cabin was restored and the site began operating as a non-profit foundation. The foundation acquired a new museum space in 2010, located just to the west of the Mayhew Cabin. This museum space provides an additional venue for visitors to learn about the history of the cabin and its role in the Underground Railroad.
