The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Begíjar is situated in the historic center of the municipality of Begíjar, in the province of Jaén, Spain. This location is part of the cultural heritage declared by the Junta de Andalucía with integral protection. The museum is dedicated to the research, dissemination, and conservation of historical and anthropological heritage, from the perspective of social processes and respect for cultural diversity.

Museum's Building and Exhibits

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Begíjar is housed in the Episcopal Palace, a 16th-century Renaissance building. The museum occupies two floors, the courtyard, and the stables of this historic building. This museum is one of the ethnographic centers called 'identity', where visitors can delve into the universe of everyday life, with aspects as endearing as childhood, games, crafts, daily life, and elements intrinsically characteristic of Begíjar.

Museum's Focus on Local Progress

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Begíjar offers a vision of the progress of the locality, starting from agriculture as the start of this progress and its decisive contribution to the transition from a craft society to an industrial one. Visitors can learn about the oil mill, means of transport, the transformation of the field, and the development of commerce and industry. The museum also highlights the aspect of food, as products were also subjected to different processes to preserve them for the rest of the year.

Inauguration and Collection of the Museum

The Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Begíjar was inaugurated on October 12, 2006. It houses a vast collection of around 17,000 pieces, which began to be formed from a compilation by its founder, Santiago Vargas Jordán, over 25 years. The museum's collection has been further enriched by contributions from the residents of Begíjar, who have helped to increase the collections, especially in the early years.
