The Museum of the Yucatecan Song, also known as Museo de la Canción Yucateca, is situated in the city of Mérida, in the Yucatán region of Mexico. It was founded in 1978 by Rosaria Cáceres Baqueiro with the aim of preserving and promoting the Yucatecan song, a unique musical genre. This museum serves as a testament to the rich musical heritage of the region.
The Museum of the Yucatecan Song offers a comprehensive chronological and thematic overview of the history of the Yucatecan song and its main representatives. It features a conference room and an open-air stage where various performances and concerts are held, providing visitors with an immersive experience of this unique musical genre.
The museum houses a room dedicated to the local music history, tracing its roots from before the arrival of the Spaniards and through the colonial period. Visitors can find information about jarana, a traditional Yucatecan dance, and various traditional musical instruments. These include the tunkul, ocarina, caracol (shell), carapacho de tortuga (turtle shell), tamborcillos, zacatán, and cascabeles mayas (bells from the Mayan culture).
