Museo del Cristallo

The Museo del Cristallo, located in Colle di Val d'Elsa, is a museum dedicated to the art and history of crystal making. It was inaugurated in 2001 and offers visitors a unique insight into the evolution of crystal production, from its early beginnings to modern design pieces.

Exhibition and History of Crystal Production

The exhibition at the Museo del Cristallo provides a comprehensive history of crystal production. It traces the origins of glass production from the 14th century, showcasing medieval artifacts, and leads up to the factories established in the 19th century in Colle di Val d'Elsa. The museum also highlights the production of glasses for optics and dichroic glass, the invention of a new system of production of objects by "semi-form", and the experiments for the realization of lead crystal in 1963. The exhibition concludes with a display of modern design objects.

Collection and Exhibits at the Museum

The museum houses a collection of 150 pieces, most of which are from private collections. These pieces showcase the artistry and craftsmanship involved in crystal production. Additionally, the second underground floor of the museum displays pieces signed by designers and artists, made in collaboration with the city's manufacturing companies. These pieces represent the modern era of crystal production and design.
