Museo Etnográfico and its collection

El Martinete de Navafría, located in Segovia, Spain, is a preindustrial establishment that was used for beating and shaping copper. The facility was powered by hydraulic energy, which was obtained by transmitting the force of water to a wheel. This wheel, through its rotation, would turn a shaft that moved the hammer used to strike and shape the mineral.

Location of El Martinete de Navafría

El Martinete de Navafría is situated at the foot of the north slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, next to the Cega River. It is located 1 kilometer south of the town of Navafría. The location was chosen due to the need for abundant water capture, which was necessary to rotate the wheel that powered the machinery, as well as the need for a solid rock base to absorb the blows during the metalworking process.

Traditional Copper Craftsmanship at El Martinete de Navafría

At El Martinete de Navafría, copper boilers, braziers, and bed warmers were primarily made. These items were crafted using traditional methods. The process involved beating a molten copper ingot until it reached the appropriate thickness, shape, and measurements for each piece.
