The Museum of the City of Alzey, a local history museum, was established in 1906 by the Antiquities Association for Alzey and its surroundings. The museum's mission is to explore the history and natural conditions of Alzey and its surroundings, collect and preserve antiquities and natural objects, and exhibit them.
Location and Building of the Museum of the City of Alzey
The Museum of the City of Alzey is housed in the building of the old city hospital, located at the intersection of Hospital Street and Antoniter Street. This three-story Renaissance building with a hipped roof and a staircase tower is a cultural monument due to the Rhineland-Palatinate Monument Protection Act.
Permanent Exhibition at the Museum of the City of Alzey
The Museum of the City of Alzey's permanent exhibition is divided into three areas: cultural history, natural history, and a special exhibit featuring a large shark tooth of the "Carcharodon angustidens", a precursor of the Megalodon. This shark tooth was discovered by a twelve-year-old in a vineyard in the Mainz Basin last year and is now one of the museum's highlights.
