The Dinotherium Museum, located in Eppelsheim, Rheinhessen, is a small natural history museum. It displays original finds and replicas of fossil mammals that were discovered in the deposits of the ancient Rhine, known as the Eppelsheim Formation. These deposits date back approximately 15 to 10 million years.
One of the highlights of the Dinotherium Museum is the cast of the skull of a Deinotherium giganteum. This specimen was discovered in 1835 in a sand pit in Eppelsheim, within the Eppelsheim Formation. The Deinotherium giganteum is a species of prehistoric elephant, making this exhibit a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Another significant exhibit at the Dinotherium Museum is the cast of the femur of a primate similar to an ape, named Paidopithex rhenanus. This specimen was found in Eppelsheim in 1820 and was described as a new genus and species 75 years later. It is considered the oldest historical find of a representative from the closer relatives of the apes, making it a significant piece in the study of primate evolution.
