The Comtois Museum, located in the prestigious setting of the Royal Front of the Citadel of Besançon since 1960, is an ethnographic museum that showcases the history, traditions, and culture of the Franche-Comté region. The museum was born out of the interest of a priest, Abbé Jean Garneret, who dedicated a significant part of his life to collecting and studying thousands of objects representative of the regional skills and traditions of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Comtois Museum organizes its collections across three levels, each dedicated to a specific theme: "Working", "Feeding", and "Entertaining and Believing in Franche-Comté". These themes provide a comprehensive overview of the region's history, culture, and way of life. From the traditional practices of cheese-making and iron casting to the region's religious beliefs and popular entertainments, the museum offers a rich and diverse exploration of Franche-Comté's past and present.
