The Museum of Art and History, previously known as the Museum of Fine Arts, is situated in the Jean Lurçat Cultural Center in Saint-Lô. This museum is home to a significant collection of paintings from the 17th to the 20th century, some of which come from various donations. The museum also houses historical pieces such as the Thorigny marble, tapestries of Gombault and Macée's loves, a lapidary from the Notre-Dame church, and a 15th-century monetary treasure.
In 2019, the Museum of Fine Arts of Saint-Lô began its transformation with the renovation of some rooms and the development of new spaces. The section dedicated to modern art and contemporary tapestries will be replaced by a new historical journey on the reconstruction of the city, from the 1950s to the present day, with the cultural aspect, shops, and schools. The model apartment will therefore be moved to integrate this new course.
The museum presents more than five hundred works, including a collection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century. The collections also include numerous tapestries dating from the 16th to the 20th century, stained glass, enamels, sculptures, Middle Ages and Renaissance coins, lithographs, engravings, photographs and postcards, models, 3D reconstructions, archaeological and architectural pieces from medieval Saint-Lô. Thus, the Saint-Lô museum is both a museum of national scope due to the diversity of its collections, but also a local museum covering the history of the city from antiquity to contemporary times.
