History Nebraska, which was previously known as the Nebraska State Historical Society, is a state agency that was established in 1878. This institution has a long history of promoting historical research and inquiry, as well as disseminating historical information. It has been a state institution since 1883 and was upgraded to a state agency in 1994.
The mission of History Nebraska is to collect, preserve, and make accessible to all, the shared histories of Nebraska. This includes both aboriginal and modern history. The agency has also developed a process for the return of human remains, burial objects, and cultural items of 1,400 individuals in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990.
In addition to its main operations, History Nebraska also operates the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center in Omaha. This facility is another important part of the agency's efforts to preserve and share the history of Nebraska.
