The museum is dedicated to the former St Bernard’s Abbey of Aduard, in its time (1192-1595) the biggest (Cistercian) cloister in The Netherlands. The museum shows many archaeological finds and a scale model of the complete convent. A movie is shown in which the process of reconstruction is detailed. Objects and pictures give an impression of Mediaeval monasticism. Every visitor gets a conducted tour, in English when preferred. The former infirmary of the convent has been preserved as a protestant church. It is included in the conducted tour, but can also be visited on its own. Tea and coffee can be enjoyed in the lush garden, open to the general public.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Museum The former monastery of Aduard offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history of one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in the Netherlands. Located in the small village of Aduard, this museum is housed in the former infirmary, one of the few remaining buildings of the once-expansive monastery complex. The museum provides information about the monastery's history, its influence on the surrounding area, and the daily lives of the monks who lived there.

Visitors appreciate the well-preserved architecture of the building, which dates back to the 13th century. The museum's exhibits include artifacts, scale models, and informative displays that help to illustrate the monastery's significance during the Middle Ages. Many reviewers note that the volunteer staff are knowledgeable and passionate about the site's history, often enhancing the experience with their insights.

However, some visitors mention that the museum is relatively small and can be explored in a short amount of time. Additionally, not all information is available in English, which can be a drawback for international tourists. The location, while picturesque, may be somewhat out of the way for those not specifically planning to visit the area.

Overall, the Museum The former monastery of Aduard is generally well-regarded by visitors interested in religious history, medieval architecture, and local culture. It provides a quiet, educational experience that sheds light on an important aspect of Dutch history, though it may not appeal to those seeking a more extensive or interactive museum experience.
