The Palazzo Collicola, which houses the Galleria d'Arte Moderna "G. Carandente", is a museum dedicated to the memory of Giovanni Carandente. It is situated in the historic center of Spoleto, occupying the entire western side of the square of the same name. The museum was inaugurated in 2000 and was refurbished in 2019. It is one of the most important contemporary art museums in Umbria, along with the Burri Collection in Città di Castello.
The museum is spread over three floors and hosts a collection of modern and contemporary art. The collection includes works by artists of the informal naturalism movement, acquired by the municipality through the editions of the Spoleto Prize, held between 1953 and 1968. The collection also includes works from the rich collection donated by Giovanni Carandente, featuring internationally renowned Italian and foreign artists.
In addition to the art collection, the museum also features a thematic library on modern and contemporary art. The library was inaugurated in December 2016, but has been operational since 2006. It was formed with periodic bequests from Giovanni Carandente since the 1980s. The library houses 30,000 volumes including exhibition catalogs, monographs of Italian and foreign artists, multimedia material, a photo library, and Italian and foreign art magazines.
