The Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo in Hilo, Hawaii, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a diverse collection of animals in a lush tropical setting. As the only natural tropical rainforest zoo in the United States, it provides an experience that sets it apart from typical zoos.

Visitors appreciate the free admission, making it an accessible attraction for families and budget-conscious travelers. The zoo's compact size allows for a leisurely stroll through the exhibits, typically taking about an hour to see everything. This makes it an ideal stop for those with limited time or young children.

The zoo houses a variety of animals, including tigers, monkeys, reptiles, and birds. Many reviewers highlight the white tiger as a standout attraction. The natural rainforest environment adds to the ambiance, creating a more immersive experience compared to traditional zoo settings.

While the zoo receives praise for its unique concept and setting, some visitors note that it's relatively small and may not have the extensive variety of animals found in larger zoos. The exhibits and facilities are sometimes described as dated or in need of upgrades.

The zoo also features a petting zoo area and a playground, which are popular among families with children. These interactive elements add value to the visit, especially for younger guests.

Maintenance and cleanliness of the zoo generally receive positive comments, though some visitors mention occasional issues with exhibit upkeep or animal visibility.

Overall, the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo offers a pleasant, low-key zoo experience in a unique tropical setting. It's particularly well-suited for short visits and those interested in seeing animals in a more natural habitat. While it may not compete with larger, more comprehensive zoos, its distinctive environment and free admission make it a worthwhile stop for many visitors to Hilo.
