The Portman Archaeological Museum is a small museum nestled in the village of Portman, which is part of the Region of Murcia. This location offers visitors a chance to explore the rich history of the area while enjoying the charm of the village.
The museum contains three rooms that display material remains from the intense mining and industrial exploitation of the mining mountain range since prehistoric times. These exhibits provide a glimpse into the area's past and the significant role mining has played in its history.
The main part of the museum's collection consists of materials from the Roman era. This was a time when the mines of Carthago Nova were intensely exploited for the production of silver, lead, iron, and zinc among other minerals. These minerals were then exported through the port of Portman, known as Portus Magnus in Latin. This collection offers a unique insight into the area's rich mining history.
