The Prefectural Museum of Ceramics in Lezoux is a departmental museum situated in Lezoux, Puy-de-Dôme. It is primarily dedicated to Gallo-Roman ceramics. During the Roman Empire, Lezoux was one of the main production centers for pottery, with its sigillated ceramics being exported throughout the Empire.
Location and Historical Significance
The Prefectural Museum of Ceramics is housed in the former Bompard ceramics factory, which reached its peak between 1870 and 1920. The buildings, arranged around a courtyard, are listed in the inventory of historical monuments. Two monumental kilns from the factory's operation are highlighted in the museum.
Museum's Collections
The collections of the Prefectural Museum of Ceramics are mainly composed of objects from excavations carried out in Lezoux. In addition to sigillated ceramics, visitors can see terracotta statuettes, lamps, potter's molds and punches, and objects found in tombs.
