The Rheinisches Feuerwehrmuseum, located in Erkelenz, was inaugurated on May 28, 1994. Today, it is managed by the Rheinisches Feuerwehrmuseum Lövenich e.V. association. The museum was born out of the private collection of Peter Höpgens and has since grown into a significant cultural institution in the region.
The Rheinisches Feuerwehrmuseum boasts a collection of around 4000 exhibits. Of these, 2500 are accessible to visitors, while the rest are stored in the depot. The exhibits provide a comprehensive insight into the history and evolution of firefighting.
The museum's collection includes pieces that date back to the 15th century, providing a deep historical perspective on firefighting. Notably, the museum displays firefighting vehicles from the years 1930 to 1965 and nine hand pumps from the 17th to 20th century, showcasing the evolution of firefighting equipment over the centuries.
