Santa Olaja Mill, also known as Santa Olalla, is a tidal mill located in the Joyel marsh in the municipality of Arnuero in Cantabria, Spain. It is part of the Trasmiera Ecopark and is one of the few mills that are still preserved in good condition. The mill is unique as it is the only one on the European Atlantic coast that functions as an Interpretation Center for these mechanical devices and maintains a visiting schedule open to the public all year round.
The Santa Olaja Mill was built in the 14th century and remained active until 1953. It had up to 10 wheels in service. The mill was one of the dense network of tidal mills that existed in the area. In 1695, it was rebuilt based on the conditions made by Francisco del Pontón Setién and Francisco de la Cabada, residents of Galizano and Pontones respectively. It then passed into private hands.
In 1996, the mill was recovered from the ruin caused by its abandonment and integrated into the Trasmiera Ecopark as one of its main attractions. The regional administration refurbished it with the aim of disseminating the trades and traditions of the area and maintaining its ecological state.
