Sonnenstein Castle in Pirna, Saxony, Germany, was the site of the Nazi extermination center, Pirna-Sonnenstein. The castle, which had been serving as a hospital since 1811, became a significant location in the history of the Holocaust. It was here that the Aktion T4 and Aktion 14f13 programs were carried out, leading to the death of approximately 15,000 disabled individuals and concentration camp detainees.

Pirna-Sonnenstein Memorial and Exhibition

The Pirna-Sonnenstein memorial was inaugurated in June 2000. It houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of avant-garde painter Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler. Diagnosed with schizophrenia around 1932, she was interned at the Sonnenstein Castle and tragically lost her life during the Aktion T4 program.

Sonnenstein Euthanasia Centre Reviews

Sonnenstein Euthanasia Centre has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Sonnenstein Euthanasia Centre in Pirna, Germany, is a somber and educational memorial site that provides visitors with insight into a dark chapter of German history. This former psychiatric hospital was used as a killing center during the Nazi era's T4 euthanasia program. The museum effectively presents the history of the site and its victims through informative exhibits and personal stories. Visitors often find the experience emotionally challenging but important for understanding the consequences of discrimination and the value of human life. The site's atmosphere is appropriately respectful, and the information provided is thorough and well-researched. While not a typical tourist attraction, it serves as a crucial reminder of past atrocities and the importance of human rights. The museum could benefit from more multilingual resources for international visitors. Despite its difficult subject matter, many visitors appreciate the site's role in preserving memory and promoting reflection on ethical issues in medicine and society.
