The Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni prison served as the primary penal colony in French Guiana for over a hundred years. Some of the prison buildings underwent restoration in the early 1980s, preserving their historical significance.
The Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni prison was established on 21st February 1858, located on the banks of the Maroni River. All prisoners from France were initially brought to this prison before being transferred to other prisons or camps.
A hospital was constructed in the prison complex in 1912. The prison was officially closed in 1946, which was also the year when the entire colonial penal system was abolished.
