The Vareler Windmühle, colloquially known as the "Grode Möhl", is a gallery Dutch windmill situated in the city of Varel, in the Friesland district of Lower Saxony. It holds the distinction of being the second largest preserved windmill in Germany, making it a significant landmark in the region.
Technological Improvements of the Vareler Windmühle
In 1919, the Vareler Windmühle underwent significant technological improvements. An automatic device was installed to adjust the mill to the wind direction, replacing the previous manual adjustment system. A wind rose, located at the top of the mill's thatched cap, was also added to automatically turn the pairs of wings in the direction of the wind.
The Vareler Windmühle as a Museum
Since 1972, the Vareler Windmühle has been functioning as a museum mill, housing the Varel Local History Association's collection of local history exhibits. The mill is home to over 2,000 exhibits that provide insight into the history of the North Oldenburg area, making it a valuable resource for those interested in learning about the region's past.
Architectural Features of the Vareler Windmühle
The Vareler Windmühle features the typical three-part structure of a gallery Dutch windmill, comprising a stone base with five floors, an octagonal wooden structure, and a cap with wings. The mill stands at a height of 29.80 m to the top of the cap and 39 m to the tip in a vertical wing position. The length of a wing, which is the radius of the mill, is 12 m. These dimensions make the Vareler Windmühle the second highest mill in Germany. The gallery, located at a height of about 15 m, serves as a viewing platform, offering visitors a unique perspective of the surrounding area.
