Vilamuseu, the Municipal Museum of Villajoyosa, is situated in the former Public School Álvaro Esquerdo. The building, which is of an eclectic style, has had its facade preserved, adding a touch of historical charm to the museum. This location is not only home to the museum but also serves as the headquarters for the municipal network of museums and monuments in Villajoyosa.
The Vilamuseu boasts an exceptional collection of local artifacts. Among the highlights of the collection are Phoenician, Punic, and Greek objects from the necropolises of Poble Nou and Casetes. These include Phoenician-Punic gold jewelry, an Etruscan bronze strainer, Attic black-figure vases, a collection of Egyptianizing amulets, and an Egyptian New Year's water bottle. These artifacts provide a fascinating glimpse into the ancient cultures that once inhabited the region.
In addition to its main collection, Vilamuseu also manages the Casa Museo la Barbera dels Aragonés, which dates back to the 16th to 19th centuries. This museum houses an interesting collection of movable objects from the romantic period, all perfectly contextualized in the original spaces of the house. Among the highlights of this collection is the clothing from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
