Established in 1986, the Virginia Aviation Museum boasted a collection of approximately thirty-four airframes. These included both owned and on-loan pieces, with a range that spanned from reproductions of the Wright Brothers' kite gliders to the still state-of-the-art SR-71 Blackbird. This diverse collection offered a comprehensive look at the evolution of aviation technology.
The Virginia Aviation Museum was housed in the Martha C. West Building, a hangar named in honor of Martha C. West. West was a pioneering aviator and the first president of the Richmond Womenโs Flying Club. This detail adds a layer of historical significance to the museum, highlighting the role of women in aviation history.
After the closure of the Virginia Aviation Museum, the SR-71, a highlight of the museum's collection, was moved to the Science Museum of Virginia. It is currently on display there, allowing tourists and aviation enthusiasts to continue appreciating this piece of aviation history.
