Woodlawn Farm is a historic site located at 1463 Gerkie Lane, east of Jacksonville, Illinois. The farm was established in 1824 by Michael Huffaker, one of the first settlers in Morgan County. This location offers a glimpse into the early agricultural history of the region and the life of its settlers.
On June 6, 2007, Woodlawn Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition underscores the farm's historical significance and its contribution to the understanding of the region's past.
According to local tradition, Woodlawn Farm served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Michael Huffaker, the farm's founder, employed many free black farmhands, which allowed him to hide escaped slaves among his workers. This aspect of the farm's history provides a unique insight into the struggle for freedom and equality in the United States.
