Alston is a historic market town situated in Cumbria, in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located at about 1,000 feet above sea level, it is notably one of England's highest market towns.
The town has a rich industrial heritage, particularly in lead mining, which shaped much of its development and local culture from the 17th to 19th centuries. The town center retains much of its historical character with cobbled streets and traditional stone buildings.
Today, Alston continues to celebrate its cultural heritage through various local initiatives and maintains its character as a small, close-knit community. The surrounding landscape of the North Pennines provides a striking backdrop to the town's cultural and historical attractions.
