Alta is a city located in Troms og Finnmark county in northern Norway, situated at the inner reaches of the Altafjord. The area has been continuously inhabited since the end of the last ice age, as evidenced by its famous rock art sites, which have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These prehistoric rock carvings and paintings, dating from around 4200 to 500 BC, represent one of the most important collections of hunter-gatherer art in Northern Europe.

Alta is also known for its Sami cultural heritage, as it lies within the traditional Sami territory. The city serves as a regional center for commerce, education, and culture in the region. During winter, Alta's location makes it an excellent spot for viewing the Northern Lights, while in summer it experiences the midnight sun phenomenon. The city combines its rich historical heritage with modern amenities and educational facilities, including the Arctic University of Norway's Alta campus.
