Austria is a country in the centre of Europe with more than 8 million inhabitants. The country consists partly of the mountain range the Alps, important for the country due to the possibilities for skiing and hiking. The main river in Austria is the Danube which is connected to the Black Sea, making it important an important aspect for the country’s economy.

The capital of Austria is Vienna, where the famous Schloss Schönbrunn is situated. In addition, Austria is known for its carriages and classical music, with Salzburg-born Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as probably the most famous example of this.

During the Fin de siecle, art in the country flourished, with names such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschk, who were active around this period. At the same time, a variant of the international Jugendstil developed: the Wiener Secession.
