Ayacucho, also known historically as Huamanga, is a city in south-central Peru and the capital of the Ayacucho Region. Located at an elevation of approximately 2,761 meters above sea level, the city combines rich historical heritage with significant cultural importance.

Founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadors, Ayacucho is known for its colonial architecture, with more than 30 churches dating back to the colonial period, including the prominent Cathedral of Ayacucho. The city plays an important role in Peruvian artistic traditions, particularly in handicrafts such as pottery, textiles, and the famous Ayacucho retablos (ornate religious altarpieces).

The local culture reflects a blend of Spanish colonial and indigenous Andean influences, visible in its festivals, customs, and artistic expressions. The city is also home to one of Peru's major universities, the National University of San Cristóbal of Huamanga, which contributes to its position as a cultural and educational center.
