Bad Frankenhausen is a historic spa town located in the German state of Thuringia, situated at the southern edge of the Kyffhäuser mountain range.
The town is particularly known for its rich historical significance, especially its connection to the German Peasants' War of 1525. It was near here that the decisive Battle of Frankenhausen took place, where the peasant army led by Thomas Müntzer was defeated. This historical event is commemorated in the town's most notable cultural landmark, the Panorama Museum, which houses Werner Tübke's monumental painting "Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany," one of the largest oil paintings in the world.
The town is also recognized for its salt springs and therapeutic spa facilities, which have been utilized since medieval times. Another distinctive feature of Bad Frankenhausen is its leaning church tower of the Oberkirche (Upper Church), which has a greater inclination than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
