Bayamo, founded in 1513, is one of Cuba's oldest Spanish colonial settlements and the capital city of Granma Province. The city played a significant role in Cuba's struggle for independence, earning it the nickname "La Ciudad Antorcha" (The Torch City) after its citizens burned much of it down in 1869 rather than surrender it to Spanish forces.

Bayamo has a rich cultural heritage, being the birthplace of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, known as the "Father of the Homeland," and where Cuba's national anthem was first sung in 1868. The city center features well-preserved colonial architecture, and its historic district includes notable landmarks such as the Plaza del Himno and the Parque Céspedes. Traditional music and dance remain important aspects of local culture, with the city maintaining strong connections to Cuban trova and other traditional musical forms.
