Binalong is a historic village located in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The town, which sits approximately 37 kilometers northwest of Yass, has a rich history dating back to the early European settlement period.
The area was originally inhabited by the Ngunnawal Aboriginal people before European settlers arrived in the 1820s. Binalong gained prominence as a notable stop on the old Hume Highway and became a staging post for horse-drawn coaches.
The town is particularly known for its connection to Australian bush poetry and culture, as it was the boyhood home of the famous Australian poet A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson, who spent his early years here and drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape and rural life. Today, Binalong maintains its rural charm with historic buildings and a small but active community that preserves its cultural heritage.
