Birdlings Flat is a small coastal settlement located on the Canterbury coast of New Zealand's South Island, approximately 45 kilometers southeast of Christchurch. Named after the Birdling family who were early European settlers in the area, this beach community is known for its distinctive pebble beach and strong ocean currents.
The area has geological significance, being popular among rockhounds who search for semi-precious stones such as agates and other minerals that can be found along its shores. The settlement is also near Lake Forsyth (Te Roto o Wairewa), which holds cultural significance for the local Māori people. While small in size, Birdlings Flat hosts a Canterbury University Mount John Observatory radar facility that conducts atmospheric research.
