Bishop Hill is a historic village located in Henry County, Illinois. Founded in 1846 by Swedish religious dissidents led by Erik Jansson, it was established as a utopian religious community. The village was named after Biskopskulla, Jansson's birthplace in Sweden.
During its peak in the 1850s, the colony was home to over 1,000 Swedish immigrants who created a successful communal society known for its craftsmanship, agriculture, and cultural traditions.
Today, Bishop Hill is a National Historic Landmark that preserves much of its original Swedish colonial architecture and cultural heritage. The village maintains several historic buildings, including the Colony Church, the Steeple Building, and various craft shops that showcase the community's artistic and cultural legacy. These structures serve as testament to the pioneering spirit and cultural contributions of Swedish immigrants in 19th-century America.
