Bitterfeld-Wolfen is a town in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, formed in 2007 through the merger of the previously separate towns of Bitterfeld and Wolfen. The city has a significant industrial heritage, particularly in the chemical and photographic industries. For many decades, it was home to ORWO (Original Wolfen), formerly part of Agfa, which was one of the major manufacturers of photographic film in Europe.
While its industrial past has left its mark on the region, the area has undergone substantial environmental and structural transformation since German reunification. Today, Bitterfeld-Wolfen continues to be an important industrial center, particularly in the chemical sector, while also developing its cultural infrastructure and green spaces.
The town maintains several historical buildings and cultural institutions that document its industrial and social history.
