Charlestown is a historic port village on the south coast of Cornwall, England. Originally built in the late 18th century to serve the local mining industry, it remains one of the finest examples of a Georgian working port in the country.
The village was constructed between 1791 and 1801 by Charles Rashleigh, from whom it takes its name, to export copper and import coal for the local mining industry. Today, Charlestown's perfectly preserved Grade II Listed harbour, with its collection of tall ships and traditional appearance, has made it a popular filming location for period dramas and a significant heritage site.
The village's maritime heritage is evident in its architecture, with many original Georgian buildings still standing. The combination of its industrial past and its well-preserved historical features makes Charlestown an important site for understanding Cornwall's maritime and mining history.
