Curuguaty is a city located in the Canindeyú Department of eastern Paraguay. Founded in 1716 by the Jesuits, the city has played a significant role in Paraguayan history.
Originally established as a Jesuit reduction named Nuestra Señora de la Natividad de Curuguaty, the settlement served as a refuge for Paraguayans during the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870). Today, Curuguaty is an important agricultural center, known for its production of soybeans, corn, and other crops. The city maintains elements of its colonial past while serving as a regional commercial hub.
The local culture reflects a blend of Paraguayan traditions with strong indigenous Guaraní influences, evident in the local language usage, customs, and festivities.
