Eldon is a small city located in Wapello County, Iowa, United States. The city is perhaps best known as the location of the house that served as the backdrop for Grant Wood's famous 1930 painting "American Gothic," one of the most recognizable artworks in American culture.

The house, built in the Carpenter Gothic style in the 1880s, still stands today and has been transformed into the American Gothic House Center, making it a significant cultural landmark. Eldon developed as a railroad town in the late 19th century, and while its population has decreased since its peak, the community maintains its small-town charm and historical significance. The surrounding area features typical Iowa agricultural landscape, with rolling hills and farmland that characterize much of the American Midwest.
