England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south.

The most notable museum in England is the British Museum in London. It houses more than seven million objects. The collection is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world, illustrating the story of human culture in every continent from its beginning to the present.

The oldest art gallery is the National, which houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. The Tate galleries house the national collections of British and international modern art.

English art was dominated by non-English artists throughout the Renaissance, but in the 18th century a native tradition became admired. It mostly consists of landscape painting, such as the work of Turner and Constable, but portraitists such as Gainsborough and Reynolds are also important.
