Finland is a country in the north of Europe with more than 5 million inhabitants. The country is known as the 'land of a thousand lakes', with around 190,000 lakes mainly in the southeast of Finland, formed by the ice age. The capital of the country is Helsinki on the southern coast of Finland, on the Gulf of Finland opposite Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
It is a country with a rich culture and history. One of the most famous heritage sites in the country is the World Heritage Suomenlinna, the Fortress of Finland, situated at the port of the capital city. Besides this fortress, the country has many other places on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Old Rauma, the old church of Petäjävesi, the wood and cardboard mill of Verla, the burial ground of Sammallahdenmäki from the Bronze Age, the High Coast / Kvarken Archipelago and the Geodesic Arch of Struve.
