Frauenstein is a small town located in the Eastern Ore Mountains (Osterzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany. The town's history dates back to the 13th century and is dominated by its impressive castle ruins, Burg Frauenstein, which sits atop a hill overlooking the town. The castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1272.
Frauenstein is also known as the birthplace of Gottfried Silbermann (1683-1753), one of Germany's most famous organ builders of the Baroque period. The Gottfried-Silbermann-Museum, housed in his birthplace, celebrates his legacy and the town's connection to historical organ building.
The town's cultural heritage is deeply rooted in the mining and craftsman traditions of the Ore Mountains region, which has significantly influenced its development and local culture.
