Gaztelugatxe is a striking islet located on the coast of Biscay in the Basque Country, Spain. Connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge, it features a historic hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista) at its summit. The islet's name comes from the Basque language, meaning "castle rock."
Dating back to the 10th century, the site has served various purposes throughout history, from a defensive outpost to a religious sanctuary. The hermitage has been rebuilt several times after fires and attacks, with the current structure dating mainly from the 19th century.
The location is notable for its cultural significance in Basque maritime heritage and its dramatic natural setting, featuring 241 steps that zigzag up to the church. In recent years, Gaztelugatxe has gained additional recognition as a filming location for popular media productions.
