Girdwood is a resort town located about 40 miles south of Anchorage in the U.S. state of Alaska. Originally established as a gold mining settlement in the early 1900s, the town was named after James Girdwood, an Irish immigrant and linen merchant who staked the first gold claims in the area. Following the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, the original townsite was relocated inland due to subsidence.

Today, Girdwood is primarily known as the home of Alyeska Resort, Alaska's premier ski destination, which has helped transform the community into a year-round outdoor recreation hub. The town maintains strong ties to its mining heritage while embracing its role as a cultural and artistic community, hosting various festivals and events throughout the year. The surrounding Chugach Mountains and temperate rainforest provide a dramatic backdrop to this small but vibrant Alaskan community.
